Ted Cooper’s teaching has been the subject of academic study and professional commentary. Julie Knerr’s 2006 University of Oklahoma doctoral dissertation, Strategies in the Formation of Piano Technique in Elementary-Level Piano Students, selected Cooper as one of four exemplary piano teachers for detailed observation, interviews, and pedagogical analysis. Joanne A. Smith’s NCKP report, "Teaching Demonstration by Ted Cooper", praised the demonstration’s planning, pacing, sequencing, musicianship, and sustained student engagement. His approach to teaching students how to practice was later discussed in Brian Manternach’s Journal of Singing article “Voice Lessons as Observed Practice," which considered those principles in the context of vocal pedagogy.

His contributions to group piano pedagogy have also been cited in graduate-level research beyond the United States. Ana Paula Teixeira Reinoso’s dissertation at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro drew on his observations about frequent, relatively low-stress performance opportunities and the motivational value of peer interaction in group lessons. Writing in The Canadian Music Teacher, Rita Raymond-Millett praised his composition Storm Chaser, highlighting its energy, keyboard movement, dynamic range, and suitability for festivals and recitals.
